Welcome to The Humanities Project, a resource of the New Mexico Museum of Art, a Division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. When the Museum opened its doors in November of 1917, it started a long-running tradition of sharing the art of New Mexico with the world, and the art of the world with New Mexico. In the years since, the art that we have gathered in our collection and exhibited in our galleries has connected with a range of humanities disciplines. Some works draw inspiration from literature or philosophy, while others are based on historical events. The connections we find between art and the humanities seem nearly limitless. In this resource, you’ll find that interdisciplinary exploration is a two-way street: the humanities are used to understand works of visual art and those same works of art can help a viewer gain a new understanding of the humanities. We hope that you’ll take the time to explore with us.
The Humanities Project has been designed with K-12 audiences in mind, but we think it will be engaging for college students and lifelong learners alike. This is not a static resource. Meant to be a living, changing resource, we will add new content annually, so check back from time to time. If you would like to hear about new content when it is posted, consider creating an account with us so you can receive updates. The Museum also wants this to be a responsive resource for our community. If there is content you’d like to see added, let us know! Providing primary sources in addition to the artwork from our collection is another important aspect of the Humanities Project. Whenever possible our curriculum modules will incorporate multimedia resources, such as scans of historical documents, interviews with scholars and experts, and audio recordings of literature to enrich user’s learning experiences.
If you are a fan of our online resource New Mexico Art Tells New Mexico History, you’ll be happy to hear that we are transferring that content here to The Humanities Project. The content from the previous site will steadily be updated and added to this site while we continue to expand our offerings across the humanities disciplines. We are glad to have you join us on this exploration of the human experience.
